After Audi luxury SUV, Enforcement Directorate seizes BMW 5-Series luxury sedan owned by conman Golden Baba

Conman Jyoti Ranjan Beura, better known as Golden Baba, has been in the news lately. He has been absconding since being released on bail from jail three years ago. He was arrested earlier in a multi-crore rupee fraud case. The department currently investigating the cases is probing the financial transactions of Golden Baba. Last month, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) seized a white-colored Audi Q5 luxury SUV that belonged to Golden Baba. Now, there are reports suggesting that another luxury car, a BMW 5 Series sedan belonging to the conman, has been seized.

According to the reports surfacing online, the car was found in the parking lot of a private hospital in Bhubaneshwar, Odisha. The car did not have a registration plate, and the central investigation agency has already seized the vehicle. We suspect that Golden Baba might have intentionally removed the plates to avoid attracting attention. The vehicle was seized by the ED under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act 2002 (PMLA).

This is the second car owned by Golden Baba that the ED has seized. Last month, we also came across reports where the agency seized an Audi Q5 from the CRPF area in the capital city. Just like the Q5, the BMW 5-Series seen in the video is also an older generation sedan. From the images and videos available online, it appears to be a diesel variant. Since there is no registration number available online, we cannot obtain further details.

Ranjan Beura, also known as Golden Baba, had stolen money from a number of organizations by falsely authorizing loans from finance companies. Prior to this investigation, the Economic Offence Wing (EOW) of the Odisha Crime Branch had examined two of his financial frauds, totaling Rs 12.04 crore and Rs 4.05 crore, respectively. He allegedly promised to secure a loan of Rs 110 crore in exchange for 12 checks worth Rs 12.04 crore from a mining company.

Cases like these and online scams are on the rise in India. The main aim of such scammers is to become wealthy quickly and enjoy a luxurious lifestyle. Most of these scammers invest in properties and vehicles to flaunt their wealth, and Golden Baba is no exception. On December 31, 2018, the Commissionerate Police in Bhubaneswar detained him for allegedly defrauding a citizen from the Keonjhar district. He was subsequently released on bail and has been missing ever since.

Golden Baba’s home was raided by the EOW, and the seized documents revealed that he had signed an agreement to use forged documents to provide financial support totaling Rs 200 crore to a private hospital in Thane, Mumbai, Rs 300 crore to Engineering Construction Ltd in Hyderabad, and Rs 50 crore to JK Medical System in Bhubaneswar. Golden Baba also had contracts with 4-5 firms, for which he had received around Rs 100 crore in post-dated cheques. The EOW also froze his seven bank accounts with deposits amounting to 51 lakh rupees and seized a locker containing nearly 1.5 kg of gold.
