Toyota launched the Hyryder Urban Cruiser compact SUV a couple of weeks ago, and at launch the Japanese automaker held back from announcing prices of lower trims of the mild hybrid variants. Soon, the Japanese automaker plans to go the whole hog, and announce prices of the lower trims of the compact SUV, powered by the mild hybrid powertrain. New variants of the Toyota Hybrid with the mild hybrid powertrain will be the E, S, G, and V trims. The Strong Hybrid variants of the Hyryder will be available in S, G and V trims, and prices for the same have already been announced.
The Toyota Hyryder is offered with two powertrains: Mild Hybrid and Strong Hybrid. The mild hybrid powertrain of the compact SUV consists of the 1.5 liter K15C 4 cylinder petrol engine (102 Bp-137 Nm) that’s naturally aspirated. This engine is paired with the Suzuki Hybrid Vehicle System (SHVS) mild hybrid unit that assists the petrol engine during hard acceleration. The SHVS mild hybrid system also offers brake energy regeneration and an idle-stop system – two features that cut fuel consumption and tail pipe emissions.

This combination has a combined output of 114 Bhp, and the strong hybrid variants of the Hyryder get a CVT automatic gearbox as standard fare.
The Strong Hybrid variant of the Hyryder also comes with an all-electric mode, wherein the SUV can be driven for up to 25 kilometers purely on battery power. This is a best-in-class feature, with the only other SUV offering this feature the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara. Another best-in-class feature on the Hyryder is the all wheel drive system, which is offered with the K15C petrol engine and the 5 speed manual gearbox.
Automatic gearbox-mild hybrid combination
The Toyota Hyryder will also be offered with a 6 speed torque converter automatic gearbox. This engine-gearbox combination is already on offer with a range of Maruti Suzuki cars including the Brezza, new XL6 and the Ertiga. While Toyota will source the engine and gearbox for the mild hybrid variants from Maruti Suzuki, the automaker will produce the Urban Cruiser Hyrder at its Bidadi factory, off Bengaluru. The Toyota factory will not just build thee Hyryder Urban Cross but also build the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara – a badge engineered SUV. Toyota wil ship out the rand Vitara to Maruti Suzuki’s NEXA dealers, who will sell and service Maruti Suzuki’s newest SUV. The Grand Vitara replaces the S-Cross in Maruti Suzuki’s NEXA line-up.
