A heavily camouflaged test mule of the impending Thar five-door was spotted driving on country roads just a few weeks ago, in November of this year. A handful of the forthcoming vehicle’s major features were highlighted in the spy photos of the SUV. To begin with, the SUV will resemble the three-door Thar virtually identically but will be somewhat longer to accommodate the middle row and two more doors.

There is no information available on the increased length of the Mahindra Thar’s five-door variant but it has been anticipated that it will be around 0.3 meters longer than the three-door Thar which measures 4.0 meters. Other changes of the five door Thar include the inclusion of a larger centre brake lamp. It will come equipped with a more distinctive set of five-spoke wheels. Apart from these changes the car will most likely be the same as the outgoing Thar.

In terms of powertrain the all-new five-door Mahindra Thar will get the same petrol and diesel engines a the 3-door model but the power and torque figures will be bumped up a little with a different state of tune. According to rumours, the engines will be tuned similarly to the Mahindra Scorpio. This translates to 172 Bhp-420 Nm for the manual version of the 2.2 diesel engine and 172 Bhp-450 Nm for the automatic version.

Meanwhile, the 2 litre turbo petrol engine in the 5 door Thar is anticipated to produce a maximum of 197 Bhp and 380 Nm of torque in the automatic version and the same power but 370 Nm of peak torque in the manual trims. There will be 6 speed manual and automatic gearbox choices available. A four-wheel drive layout with low and high ranges is likely to be standard across all trims.

In other Mahindra news, rumors have been floating around the interwebs that Mahindra Auto has also been working on the development of a less powerful, more affordable variant of the Thar. According to reports, Mahindra is developing a new Thar model that will be powered by the same 1.5-liter diesel engine seen in the Mahindra Bolero.

Officially, the new, cost-effective Thar will be known as the Thar Lite. As of yet,  Mahindra has not yet released any information about the new development, but according to rumours, the company will soon introduce a new inexpensive Thar model that would have an identical appearance to the Thar’s regular model, bu t it will weigh around 100 kg less. This new Lite iteration of the Thar will also not be offered with 4×4 features in order to keep the costs and weights low.
