BYD all-electric SUV to launch this festive season; Details

After having a decent run with the e6 electric MPV in commercial circuits, BYD is planning its next launch in the Indian car market with the Atto 3, its all-electric midsize SUV. However, contrary to the previous rumours of it launching at the Auto Expo 2023, the new BYD Atto 3 has been preponed for India and is now coming before the festive season.

While the BYD Atto 3 is coming to India sooner than expected, the all-electric SUV will be at the core of BYD’s podium at the Auto Expo 2023. Initially, the new Atto 3 will be brought to India in limited numbers through the CBU route, though the carmaker might shift to local assembly at its manufacturing plant in Sriperumbudur near Chennai.

In terms of pricing and positioning, the BYD Atoo3 will directly compete with the current electric SUVs like MG ZS EV and Hyundai Kona Electric. The Atto3 measures 4455mm long and 1875mm wide, which makes it a direct rival to the ZS EV and Kona Electric. The Atto 3 comes with a front-wheel-drive configuration, with a front-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor that develops 204 bhp of power and 310 Nm of torque, much more than its direct rivals. With this motor, it is capable of doing the 0-100 km/h sprint in 7.3 seconds.

320 km of range

Globally, the BYD Atto 3 is available with two battery configurations, 49.92 kWh, which offers a WLTP-certified range of 320 km, and 60.48 kWh which claims a WLTP-certified range of 420 km. Given the segment in which it is going to enter, expect the India-spec model to go with the 60.48 kWh battery pack option. Both these battery packs of the Atto 3 feature BYD’s patented Blade Battery Technology. While this battery is compatible with 3-pin AC and Type-2 AC chargers, it can also be charged with up to 80 kW DC fast charging options.

The BYD Atto 3 is one of the most modern-looking and equipped electric midsize SUVs, which gets features like all-LED headlamps and tail lamps, 18-inch alloy wheels and a panoramic sunroof. The list of features is longer with inclusions like powered front seats, a 12.8-inch rotating touchscreen infotainment system, a full-TFT instrument console, ambient lighting and an electric tailgate. In addition to the comprehensive ADAS safety package, the BYD Atto 3 also has several other safety features like a tyre pressure monitoring system, 360-degree parking camera, hill descent control and seven airbags.

BYD might price the new Atto 3 at a premium over the MG ZS EV and Hyundai Kona Electric, since it’s going to be an imported offering, at least in the initial days. Expect it to be priced in the range of Rs 25-30 lakh.
