Mahindra XUV400 electric SUV launch confirmed for September

Mahindra will launch the XUV400 electric SUV in India in early September, on either the 8th or 9th. This information comes from Hormazd Sorabjee, the editor of AutocarIndia. The Mahindra XUV400 is the all-electric version of the XUV300 sub-4 meter compact SUV.

Unlike the XUV300, which measures under 4 meters in length for excise duty gains, the XUV400 is expected to measure a little over 4 meters given the fact that there are no excise duty benefits for sub-4 meter electric vehicles. It remains to be seen if the additional length of the XUV400 translates into a bigger boot – a weak point of the XUV300. The Mahindra XUV400 will take on the Tata Nexon EV, and prices are likely to start from under Rs. 15 lakh.

While Mahindra hasn’t yet revealed the exact range or battery-spec of the XUV400 electric SUV, we anticipate that the EV will go about 350 kilometers on a single charge. In terms of peak power, expect the electric motor to make over 140 Bhp – a number that the Nexon EV makes. In terms of design, the front grille is expected to be blanked out as there’s no engine up front. Here is a video that shows a heavily camouflaged XUV400 testing on Indian roads ahead of launch.

The XUV400 will be Mahindra’s first mass market electric SUV for the Indian market, and is distinct from the Born Electric range of ground-up electric vehicles the automaker is developing for India and international markets. Born Electric is a new electric vehicle brand from Mahindra, and there are five new electric vehicles currently being developed.

Three of them will be sold under the Born Electric sub-brand while two will be sold under the Mahindra brand. All these vehicles will be underpinned by Mahindra’s new electric vehicle platform called INGLO. Mahindra has tied up with Volkswagen to source some parts under the latter’s MEB electric vehicle program.

The first electric SUV under the INGLO platform will be the XUV.e8, which is essentially a XUV700-sized electric SUV with three rows of seats. It’ll be launched in December 2024. The next electric SUV is the XUV.e9, which is the coupe SUV variant of the XUV.e8, and will be launched in April 2025. The other three electric vehicles under the Born Electric brand – BE.05, BE.07 and BE.09 – will be launched in October 2025, October 2026 and 2027 respectively.

Here’s what Mahindra’s top management had to say about the new range of electric vehicles,

Dr Anish Shah, Managing Director & CEO, Mahindra Group, said,

We are proud and delighted to showcase our Born Electric vision. It provides a strategic direction that is in line with our core philosophy of ‘Rise’ – to be an organisation that will be counted among the best in the world and at the same time rise for our planet to fight against climate change. Mahindra will offer customers future-ready technology, head-turning design, world-class products and the benefits of global partnerships. By 2027, we expect that a quarter of the SUVs we sell will be electric.

Rajesh Jejurikar, Executive Director – Auto and Farm Sectors, Mahindra & Mahindra, said,

Our vision of Born Electric is underpinned by the future-ready INGLO platform, two new exciting brands and the Heartcore design philosophy. The five electric SUVs provide a powerful glimpse of our strategic direction and hews to the Mahindra attitude of a racing spirit and the attitude of adventure. We aim to not only electrify the roads but also the hearts and minds of SUV aficionados in India and around the world.
