Mahindra XUV400 Electric SUV: New TVC released

Days ago, Mahindra revealed the XUV400 – an electric SUV based on the sub-4 meter XUV300. The XUV400 EV’s price announcement will happen at launch, which is slated for January 2023. The XUV400 will be Mahindra’s most affordable electric vehicle, and is based on the Ssangyong Tivoli – a South Korean compact SUV that also underpins the XUV300. In that sense, the XUV400 is not a clean sheet electric vehicle design, and is instead a vehicle that was conceptualized as an internal combustion engined car. The XUV400 EV shares much of its design and features with the XUV300, with key differences being some styling elements and the fact that the car is powered by batteries rather than petrol or diesel. In the run up to the XUV400’s launch, Mahindra has just released a TVC that highlights various aspects of the upcoming electric SUV.

As for styling, the XUV400 retains the headlamp design of the XUV300 but the front grille is blanked off as there’s no radiator in the electric SUV. The bumpers feature revised designs, both at the front and the rear. The tail lamp design has also been revised on the XUV400 while the SUV’s longer profile gives it a better stance than its ICE sibling. Mahindra’s new twin peaks logo in bronze finish and X-shaped elements are other stylistic changes on the electric SUV. The XUV400 will be available in Arctic Blue, Everest White, Galaxy Grey, Napoli Black and Infinity Blue colours. Those opting for a dual tone paint scheme will get a copper coloured roof.

Another big change is the fact that the XUV400 is longer than the XUV300 since electric SUVs don’t qualify for excise duty benefits even if they measure under 4 meters in length. The additional length of nearly 200 mm has allowed Mahindra engineers to package more space into the XUV400, which gets a 368 liter boot (109 liters more than what the XUV300 offers). The XUV400 also gets a best-in-class wheelbase of 2,600 mm, which means that the electric SUV will be quite spacious for its passengers.

Mahindra XUV400 Electric SUV: New TVC released ahead of official launch

The Mahindra XUV400 Electric is powered by an electric motor that generates 147 Bhp of peak power, and 310 Nm of peak torque right from idle. The electric SUV uses a 39.4 kWh battery pack that gives it a claimed range of 456 kilometers. The 0-100 Kmph sprint is completed in 8.3 seconds while top speed is electronically limited at 150 Kmph. The XUV400 offers a slightly longer claimed range than the Tata Nexon EV Max despite having a smaller battery and better performance figures. We’ll have to wait for the real world range to see how far the Mahindra XUV400 can actually go on one full charge.

As for safety features, the Mahindra XUV400 is a best-in-class EV, with 6 airbags, ESP, disc brakes on all four wheels, front parking sensors, reverse parking camera ABS with EBD, corner braking control and tyre pressure monitoring system on offer. The electric SUV gets three driving modes – Fun, Fast and Fearless – that alter throttle response and steering stiffness based on the mode chosen. If Mahindra manages to undercut the Tata Nexon EV Max with sharp pricing for the XUV400, India’s newest homegrown electric SUV could be a big hit.
