While electric cars are steadily gaining popularity in recent times, their high price points are keeping them away from many potential buyers. However, some people just want to feel the exclusivity and calmness of driving a basic electric vehicle. For those people, some fabricators in India are making custom-made vintage-themed electric vehicles using bare-basic powertrains and components. Since these vehicles have their top speeds restricted to 45 kmph, they also do not require a driving license to drive on the roads.
Vintage car from Pluto Motors
Punjab-based Pluto Motors has developed this white-coloured vintage-themed electric car, which has been equipped with two batteries beneath its bonnet and two batteries at the back. This two-seater car has a top speed of 45 kmph, due to which it doesn’t require any driving license. Equipped with a centrally-placed fully-digital instrument console, 19-inch tube-type tyres and LED auxiliary lamps, this electric car claims a maximum range of 100 km.
Greenmaster
As the name suggests, this green-coloured vintage-themed electric car named ‘Greenmaster’ is a two-seater offering, which comes with a centrally-placed dual-pod instrument console and spoke wheels and tube-type tyres from a Royal Enfield motorcycle. This all-electric vintage car sources its power from a 1.2 kW electric motor, with which it claims a peak torque output of 2.2 Nm, a maximum driving range of 100 km and a top speed of 45 kmph. It has a starting price of Rs 4.5 lakh and offers a 3-year warranty for its battery.
Rolls-Royce Classic Look vintage car
Featuring designs of vintage cars from Rolls-Royces from the yesteryears, this electric vintage car has a two-door design with flared rounded wheel arches. At the front, this electric car has a round-themed chrome grille with faux Rolls-Royce badges, while the sides of the bonnet get multiple slats for a vintage look. This two-seater car comes with a steering taken from a Maruti Suzuki Zen and a centrally-placed instrument console. On a single charge, it can drive up to 80 km and has a top speed of 80 kmph.
Royal Safari
Another EV is from brand Royal Safari. It is made out of sheet metal and gets a luggage space as well. The vehicle also gets a waterproof roof, which can be removed. It gets a monochrome instrument cluster that shows all the details and status of the EV. There are battery pack options available with the car. Lithium-Ion and Lead Acid type batteries are available. The range is about 100 km.
Electric Willys
This electric version of the scaled-down version of the Willys Jeep has smaller dimensions which are proportional to the Willys CJ3B Jeep. The scaled-down dimensions make the Ewillys look smaller but completely identical to the original version.
While the battery is placed beneath the front hood, the motor is positioned between the rear wheels. The battery takes 4-5 hours for a full charge and drives 100 km in a single charge, while the motor enables it to reach a top speed of 45 kmph. The e-Willys is on sale by its manufacturer for Rs 2.50 lakh.
While these electric vehicles look very much like old-school vintage cars, they look like scaled-down versions with smaller dimensions, which can make anyone think that they are not original cars with petrol engines. However, one should note that these vehicles cannot be used for commercial purposes, but only for personal usage.
